Baby Room Ideas

Every catalog and magazine is bursting with baby room ideas! How do you decide on a style that will reflect your family’s sensibilities? Here’s a tip from my friends, Emma and Carter. Emma says, “Throw away the catalogs and lock yourself in a room to think about what you really want!”

A fallen limb from a sycamore tree is hardly what you expect as the focal point in a baby nursery… unless the theme for the nursery is “nesting.” When Emma and Carter welcomed baby Lilah into the world, they had the perfect nest waiting for her.

With textured taupe walls and hand-painted birds, the room is the perfect blend of practicality and couple’s simple yet authentic style. "I like birds.” Emma told a reporter from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, “those kinds of silhouettes, and the symbolism behind birds - they are monogamous and family oriented. And a nest is a place where you feel very comforted, yet you're getting ready to fly."

And ready to fly she is! Lilah is now 18-months old and is finally enjoying all the cozy nooks and cuddle corners of her room. An upholstered a crib mattress makes a great reading nook. A few cherished toys and books are tucked away in bins. The simplicity of the room and the spare accoutrements have allowed it to grow with her.

The dresser is a family heirloom. The baker’s rack is a find from an antiquing excursion and the rocker, a gift from a friend. The result is a nursery that (much like the rest of Emma and Carter’s house) is decorated with love.

And the tree? Oh yes... it's a gift from an unusual winter storm passed through St. Louis a few months before Lilah was born. The neighborhood was littered with fallen trees and limbs. What a lovely addition to the nest! So the couple searched for the perfect one and with a little help from a friend, lugged it back to their house, and cemented it in an oversized ceramic pot.

Isn’t it amazing what lovely baby room ideas can bubble up from one’s imagination?
